The Basics of Anti-Aliasing: Using Switched-Capacitor Filters - AN3494

چکیده

Aliasing due to unwanted, spurious out-of-band signals is a problem in many applications that use A/ D converters. These signals, if not filtered properly, can seriously impact the performance of a data-conversion system. This application note discusses the principles of anti-aliasing and its effect on system performance. It also offers advice, via an elegant and cost-effective, complete-system example, on using an integrated switched-capacitor device for this important function. It covers in detail all the important performance parameters and practical issues associated with designing a high-performance system. What causes aliasing? The effect is explained in the Nyquist criterion. This criterion says that a time-continuous signal needs to be sampled more than twice per period if converted into a timediscrete signal. If the signal is not sampled often enough, information is irretrievably lost. This problem can be seen in Figure 1. If a signal is sampled once per period, a DC signal (with arbitrary amplitude) is generated (Figure 1a); if it is sampled exactly twice per period, a square wave is generated (Figure 1b). It is important to note that sampling at exactly twice the period of the input signal is a very special case and should always be avoided. Figure 1c shows a 190kHz signal sampled at 200kHz. The result is a perfect sine wave, but with a completely wrong frequency. This frequency change is caused by aliasing. Figure 1a. A sine wave sampled only once per period results in a DC signal with arbritary amplitude.

filtorX: computer-aided filter design and industry

Switched-capacitor transmit and receive filters for a CCITT compliant codec were designed at Mite1 Semiconductor employing hand-coded Pascal[ 12] programs and a variety of other tools. This approach required a significant investment in the designer’s time: to manually optimise biquadratic filter section performance; to write and debug the Pascal programs used and to generate simulation netlists...

A Sigma-Delta ADC with Decimation and Gain Control Function for a Bluetooth Receiver in 130 nm Digital CMOS

We present a discrete-time second-order multibit sigma-delta ADC that filters and decimates by two the input data samples. At the same time it provides gain control function in its input sampling stage. A 4-tap FIR switched capacitor (SC) architecture was chosen for antialiasing filtering. The decimation-by-two function is realized using divided-by-two clock signals in the antialiasing filter. ...

A Resonant Approach to Interfacing Amplifiers to Switched-Capacitor ADCs Application Note (AN-827)

High sampling rate analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) are commonly used to sample complex modulated signals at intermediate frequencies in modern wireless receiver designs. Often CMOS switched-capacitor based ADCs are selected for such designs due to their attractive low cost and power dissipation. These ADCs utilize an unbuffered front end directly coupled to the sampling network, which prese...

A Novel Structure for Realization of a Pseudo Two Path Band-Pass Filter

In this paper, a modified auto zeroed integrator is used to design and simulate a low-voltage high-Q switched capacitor pseudo 2-path filter.  The filter is a sixth–order Chebyshev band-pass filter operating at sampling frequency of 1MHz and center frequency of 250 kHz with a quality factor of 50. The proposed filter has both low-voltage and high speed properties of the auto zeroed integrators ...
